What is the Gospel?
by Greg Gilbert
Reviewed by: Pastor Ryan
In this great little book about the biggest, most important issue in life, Greg Gilbert sets out to answer these 4 questions:
1. Who made us, and to whom are we accountable?
2. What is our problem? In other words, are we in trouble and why?
3. What is God’s solution to that problem? How has He acted to save us from it?
4. How do I – myself, right here, right now – how do I come to be included in that salvation? What makes this good news for me and not just for someone else? (p.31)
Skillfully using Scripture and easy-to-read common sense, Gilbert offers answers to these questions in a simple summary of the gospel: God. Man. Christ. Response.
This book is great for un-believers, new Christians, and seasoned veterans of the faith. It offers a good explanation of what salvation is and how to intelligently, biblically talk about the Gospel. It seems like many times our minds get cloudy and our tongues get tangled when we try to explain the very thing that makes us Christians. Worse yet, when presented with opportunities to share our faith, we sometimes fall in to using common terminology and phrases that either miscommunicate what the gospel is or misrepresent what God’s word really calls us to do in response to Christ. Gilbert brings clarity to this situation and inspires us to share the gospel with those around us while reminding Christians what it is that God has done for us. All of this works toward building up the reader and inspiring worship of the God of the universe who has graciously, lovingly provided His Son as the only means of being saved from the just penalty of our sins.
